Asus G74SX-A2 Review Performance, Design, and Features
Asus G74SX-A2 system is supported by a 2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-2630QM processor (same as used in another Asus Republic of Gamers series like Asus G73SW-BST6 and G74SX-BBK7). But in Asus G74SX-A2, this processor is boosted with enormous 16GB of DDR3 RAM. In PCMark 7 benchmark test, Asus G74SX-A2 scored at 3,941 points, an advanced compared to Asus G74SX-BBK7 that scored at 2,569 points. While equipped with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M GPU (3GB), Asus G74SX-A2 resulting great performance in graphic processing. On 3DMark 2006 testing, Asus G74SX-A2 scored at 16,970 points at medium settings and 12,135 at high settings. But this result still fell behind Alienware M17X (20,097 medium, 15,845 high). Asus G74SX-A2 played Crysis (DirectX 10) at 81.9 fps at medium settings and 13.2 fps at high setting. While in Lost Planet 2 (DirectX 9), it played at 82.5fps at medium and 30.6 at native resolution. The conclusion is that with this Asus G74SX-A2 you can play all games, but keep the hard 3D games at medium settings.
Talking about battery performance, Asus G74SX-A2 is equipped with 8-cell 74Wh battery that can last for 2 hours 59 minutes (based on MobileMark 2007 battery-life benchmark test). On the other side, Alienware M17X lasted for 2:24 with its enormous 90Wh battery, and Asus G74SX-BBK7 that comes with 8-cell 74Wh battery run up to 1 hour 57 minutes. While talking about display, Asus G74SX-A2 has 17.3-inch large screen which can display to 1920 by 1080 resolution. With this 1080p real high definition widescreen, it fits to play movies and games.
Asus G74SX-A2 has a thick wedge-shaped profile and puts the keyboard and palm rest at a 5-degree slope for more comfortable typing experience. That keyboard has large chiclet-style keys. Its extra large multitouch trackpad is also good, while its mousebuttons are quiet and soft. Asus G74SX-A2 dimension is measured at 2.4 by 16.5 by 12.8-inches HWD and weighs at 9.7 pounds. Another interesting thing is that this Asus G74SX-A2 has quiet and cool air ventilating system. Asus G74SX-A2 has two large vents run along the back of the laptop, to provide plenty of airflow in and out, and pointing the blowing air away from the user. This air system is supported by two large fans to cool the processor and the graphics card which is independently operated. Italso works without noise.
For its storage, Asus G74SX-BBK7 is supported by two hard drives: a speedy 160GB solid-state drive (SSD) and a larger 750GB 7,200rpm spinning hard disk. While for optical, it equipped with built-in Blu-ray (Blu-ray player/ DVD +/- RW) drive. Sounds arealso greats since it combine THX TruStudio and EAX Advanced HD 5.0 to be one of the best audio with rich bass. Ports and features available are: a USB 3.0 port, three USB 2.0 port, HDMI and VGA video outputs, a multi card reader (SD, MMC, MS/Pro), a Kensington Lock and jacks for headphones and a microphone. While for network & communications, Asus G74SX-BBK7 is supported by: a Gigabit Ethernet port, Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth 3.0.
